Three irrigation canals have been constructed and put into operation in Nahrin and Khwaja districts of Baghlan province at a cost of 10.4 million Afghanis.
Officials from the Taliban’s Directorate of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Baghlan said on July 29 that the completion of the projects will enable the irrigation of hundreds of jeribs of agricultural land and improve farmers’ access to water resources.
According to the officials, the irrigation canals were built with financial support from the World Food Programme (WFP). The projects aim to strengthen the agricultural sector and support rural livelihoods.
A large part of Afghanistan’s economy depends on agriculture, while water shortages and damaged irrigation infrastructure remain major challenges for the sector.
In recent years, international organizations have supported small-scale infrastructure projects, including the construction of irrigation canals, to assist farmers and improve food security in Afghanistan.
