U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will be “indirectly” involved in nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, February 16, Trump said the talks would begin Tuesday in Geneva and described them as “very important.”
He added that he believes Iran wants an agreement and does not wish to face the consequences of failing to reach one.
Ahead of the negotiations, tensions have escalated, and the United States has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East.
U.S. officials have said that if the talks fail, military options will also remain on the table.
Previous nuclear negotiations between the two countries had stalled over the issue of uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, a matter Washington views as a potential pathway for Tehran to acquire a nuclear weapon.
