The United Nations says drought, water shortages and extreme weather events in Afghanistan have affected people’s livelihoods, displacement and the prospects for peace and stability.
The UN said on Monday, October 5, in its podcast Climate, Crisis and Courage that Afghanistan is among the countries highly vulnerable to climate change.
The organization said managing limited resources, adapting to climate change and strengthening regional cooperation are important to addressing the impacts of the crisis.
The UN added that climate-related pressures, alongside economic and political challenges, have placed additional pressure on communities across the country.
The UN also examined shared climate security challenges facing Afghanistan, neighboring countries and Central Asia, stressing the importance of regional cooperation to address cross-border risks.
