The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says that Afghanistan imports more than 80 percent of its required electricity from abroad and spends more than $280 million annually on electricity imports.
The organisation reported on Thursday, 5 November, that despite its heavy reliance on imported electricity, Afghanistan has the capacity to generate more than 220 gigawatts of solar energy.
The UNDP added that its projects have provided clean energy to more than 5.5 million people in Afghanistan since 2021.
However, the organisation said that most parts of Afghanistan still lack access to reliable and sustainable electricity.
The UNDP stressed that addressing this problem requires cooperation and joint efforts, adding that no single institution can bridge this gap on its own.
