The United Nations has allocated $10 million to support Afghanistan’s returnees from Iran, as announced by Tom Fletcher, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. The funds, drawn from the UN Emergency Relief Fund, aim to address the urgent needs of vulnerable individuals. Fletcher emphasized that the funds are intended to protect the most vulnerable individuals from abuse.
On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Fletcher shared the announcement on his X account, highlighting the critical role of this funding. Thousands of Afghanistan’s citizens are deported from Iran daily and left stranded at the borders, facing significant challenges upon their return. The lack of adequate shelter, healthcare, and food services exacerbates their plight, making international support essential.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) had previously called for increased funding to aid returnees. This new allocation responds to those calls, aiming to alleviate the hardships faced by individuals returning from Iran and Pakistan. The funding is a step toward addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting these returnees.
