The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says that the city of Herat in western Afghanistan is expanding beyond recognition. The programme warned on Monday, August 25, in a message that without planning, rapid growth can lead to population congestion, unsafe housing, and service shortages.
According to the United Nations, the face of the city has changed beyond recognition from 1985 to 2025. The programme added in a call: “Now is the time to shape Herat’s future.” Previously, residents of Herat had also spoken about changes to the city’s old appearance as well as its historical sites.
Herat province holds special importance due to its historical, cultural, and close commercial relations with Iran.
