UN-Habitat

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has stated that traffic accidents are a preventable crisis and one of the primary causes of mortality in Afghanistan.

The organization said on Sunday, December 7, on its X platform that by improving road design, prioritizing pedestrian safety, and reducing traffic speeds, safer cities can be built for everyone.

The United Nations is raising these points at a time when dozens of people lose their lives annually due to traffic accidents in Afghanistan.

Recently, in a traffic accident involving a passenger vehicle carrying Afghan migrants being returned from Iran, approximately 80 people lost their lives.

It is worth noting that constructing safe roads, training drivers, increasing public awareness, and enforcing standard traffic regulations can play an important role in reducing casualties.

UN-Habitat had previously stated that cities in Afghanistan face a shortage of investment, and the lack of standard construction is putting pressure on the capacity of urban services.
