The United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Afghanistan (UN-Habitat) has warned that the country is vulnerable to environmental degradation.
The agency wrote on its Facebook page on Saturday, 8 November 2025, that poor waste and water management, along with a shortage of green spaces, threaten public health.
UN-Habitat in Afghanistan stressed that with targeted urban planning and community action, it is possible to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for citizens.
It is worth noting that the programme had also announced recently that the pace of urbanization in Afghanistan is increasing rapidly, but the country’s cities do not have the necessary capacity to accommodate this growth.
The agency had warned that if no measures are taken to manage this trend, unplanned urban expansion could lead to rising poverty, housing shortages, and pressure on urban services.
