The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that approximately five million people have been returned to Afghanistan over the past two years.
UNAMA stated in a report released on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, that many returnees have primarily come back due to forced deportations and immigration restrictions imposed by neighboring countries.
According to the report, in 2025 alone, around 2.78 million citizens of Afghanistan returned to the country, including approximately 1.88 million from Iran and about 899,000 from Pakistan.
UNAMA added that during the months of June and July, the daily number of returnees from Iran reached between 30,000 and 40,000, placing severe strain on absorption capacity at border points.
The report noted that the United Nations and humanitarian organizations have intensified their efforts to provide emergency assistance, but the scale of the crisis far exceeds the capacity of available resources.
The organization further stated that a severe funding shortage has meant that assistance has been unable to meet the needs of all returnees.
