Tajudeen Oyewale, head of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan, says that 12 million children received polio vaccines last year.
Tajudeen said in a message on Saturday, April 25, that with this figure, 98 percent of children have been covered.
He also added that more than 16 million people have received measles vaccines.
The message states: “1.6 million doses of Penta-3 have been administered.”
This comes as the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health and international organizations have launched the first round of the 2026 polio vaccination campaign across all provinces.
Afghanistan and Pakistan are the countries where polio has not been completely eradicated.
