The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that cuts in humanitarian aid in Somalia are creating serious challenges for children and families’ access to essential services.
UNICEF wrote on Friday, August 21, on X that some nutrition programs are being shut down due to funding shortages, while access to water, education, and protection services is also becoming more difficult.
James Elder, a UNICEF spokesperson, stressed the worsening situation, saying: “We have the programs, we have the partners; what we don’t have is the funding.”
UNICEF warned that continued funding shortages could have serious consequences for Somali children and further restrict their access to essential services, including nutrition, water, education, and protection.
The agency called on the international community to urgently provide the funding needed to maintain essential services for children and vulnerable families in Somalia.
