The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says that Afghanistan’s prolonged drought could deprive countless families and children of access to safe drinking water.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 23 November, UNICEF said it is working with support from South Korea to establish water-supply systems for 20 local communities in the provinces of Ghor and Nangarhar.
The agency described the creation of sustainable water-supply systems as the key solution for ensuring access to safe water in Afghanistan.
UNICEF has previously warned that eight out of every ten people in Afghanistan drink unsafe water.
The agency has repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of safe water resources across the country, stressing that the lives of families and children are at serious risk.
UNICEF has also noted that by 2030, Kabul’s water supply is expected to dry up completely.
