The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that following the devastating earthquakes, the arrival of winter has turned the crisis into a catastrophe for children in Afghanistan.
The organization reported on Thursday, January 22, that with families continuing to be displaced and temperatures below zero, approximately 270,000 children are facing severe and life-threatening cold.
UNICEF says it is providing winter assistance to affected children and families, but has emphasized that the needs remain extremely urgent and extensive.
This comes as recent earthquakes in several provinces of Afghanistan, in addition to causing numerous casualties and injuries, have left many families with their homes destroyed and without shelter.
The arrival of the cold winter and the reduction in humanitarian aid have increased the hardships of families affected by the earthquakes, while the United Nations had announced that a large portion of Afghanistan’s population will need urgent assistance in 2026.
