Andy Kim, a US senator, has said that Afghan allies risked their lives to protect American troops while working with US forces.
Kim wrote on X on Wednesday night, April 22, that he witnessed at the United States Department of State that these individuals helped the United States under very difficult circumstances.
The senator added that sending these people to a country they have never been to and where their safety is not guaranteed would be a “cruel and shameful” act.
These remarks come as The New York Times reported that the United States government is considering a plan to transfer more than 1,100 stranded Afghan refugees from the As-Sayliyah (CAS) camp in Qatar to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to the report, if the refugees refuse relocation to Congo, they may face being returned to Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban, where, according to migrant rights organizations, many of their lives could be at risk.
Reports indicate that more than 190,000 Afghans were transferred to the United States after the fall of Kabul, but the situation of around 1,100 people who remain in Qatar is still unclear.
