Five Democratic US senators have called on the Pentagon to disclose the full cost of the war against Iran, condemning what they described as the US government’s “continued efforts to conceal the true cost of the war.”
USA Today reported on Monday night, October 19, that the senators, in a letter led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, asked Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, to provide estimates of damage to American bases, timelines for repairs, and details of the costs of alternative facilities.
The military has estimated that the war had cost $43.6 billion by September 3, excluding damage to bases and facilities hit in Iranian attacks.
The Democratic senators noted that Cooper had shared the damage estimates during a classified briefing. They wrote: “The American people deserve to know the full cost of the Trump administration’s unauthorized war against Iran.”
They added: “There is no justification for classifying this cost estimate. Damage to the bases and facilities of our allies has also increased the cost of this war for our regional partners and put American troops at risk.”
