Wildfires in Spokane, Washington, have destroyed more than 700 structures and forced tens of thousands of people to leave their homes in and around the second-largest city in the state.
Reuters reported early on August 4 that wildfires have continued for three days in areas surrounding Spokane.
According to the report, Benjamin Cosel, a spokesperson for the Washington State Incident Management Team, said at least 700 structures, mostly in residential areas, have been burned. Aerial infrared assessments indicate that around 400 additional structures, including homes, may have been damaged or destroyed.
Scientists say that recent years have seen prolonged droughts and extreme heat, conditions that are largely linked to human-caused climate change.
