International media have reported that around 14 people have died due to lightning strikes in various parts of Bangladesh.

Reuters reported on Monday, April 27, that seasonal storms have swept across the country.

Bangladeshi authorities said that most of the victims were farmers working in open fields.

Lightning strikes kill hundreds of people annually in Bangladesh.

The country declared lightning a natural disaster in 2016 after more than 200 people died in May alone, including 82 in a single day.

According to the report, experts say the increase in lightning-related deaths is linked to deforestation, as many tall trees that previously helped divert lightning away from people have been cut down.
