The European Union has announced a €200 million grant package to strengthen transport, energy, and digital connectivity infrastructure across the South Caucasus.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement on Wednesday, July 1, during a visit to Baku, saying the funding will be provided through a “Peace Through Connectivity” package aimed at supporting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan while improving regional links.
According to von der Leyen, the initiative is designed to help build a peaceful and prosperous future for the South Caucasus by promoting regional cooperation and supporting the implementation of the peace agreement between the two countries.
The European Commission also announced an additional €20 million to support local communities in Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The funding will be used for healthcare, mine clearance, skills development, and support for local businesses.
Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a peace agreement in August last year after nearly four decades of conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, following mediation by the United States.
