Amnesty International, marking the fifth anniversary of the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, has called on the United States and the international community to take stronger action to support the rights of Afghan women and girls.
The organization said on Saturday, August 15, that the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s education, employment and social participation are examples of widespread gender-based discrimination.
Amnesty International also warned against normalizing relations with the Taliban and called for international engagement to be conditional on respect for human rights.
The organization has urged Donald Trump’s administration to place human rights, particularly women’s rights, at the center of its Afghanistan policy and to use US influence in international institutions to support groups facing repression.
Amnesty International has also called for support for at-risk Afghans, particularly former US partners, and for preventing the forced return of Afghan asylum seekers.
