Protesters took to the streets of Tirana, Albania’s capital, and moved toward Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office hours after he announced new measures to curb a wave of anti-government demonstrations.
Reuters reported late Sunday, October 25, that protesters initially gathered outside the Ministry of Education before marching toward Rama’s office.
According to the report, demonstrators set fire to chairs that Rama had placed outside his office as a gesture inviting dialogue with the government.
The protests, led by students and fueled by public anger over government corruption, a lack of job opportunities and poor education quality, have swept through central Tirana this month and spread to other cities.
The unrest follows months of largely peaceful summer protests against a luxury coastal development project backed by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The demonstrations have become the biggest challenge Rama has faced to date.
