Kabul – On Tuesday, October 12, the leaders of the G20 are supposed to be gathered hosting by Italy in order to discuss the impending crisis in Afghanistan.
The meeting, which is being held virtually, will focus on providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, security concerns, and ways to ensure safe passage for Afghan citizens abroad.
“Providing humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable groups, especially women and children, is essential as winter approaches”, an official of G20 said.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, which is supposed to participate in the meeting, has emphasized injecting cash into the economy of Afghanistan.
Italy is the periodical director of G20, and it will host this meeting in the face of very different views of different groups on how to deal with Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the United States.
The main challenge is that western countries want to talk about how the Taliban is leading Afghanistan and how they treat women. Meanwhile, China and Russia are emphasizing a policy of non-interference, a diplomatic source stated.
It is also expected that the US president, Joe Biden, and the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi will participate in the meeting. However, according to the Chinese reports, the president of China, Xi Jinping, won’t join the meeting. Although, Vladimir Putin’s participation is not clear yet.
In addition, Pakistan and Iran, which are the neighbors of Afghanistan, haven’t been invited. Qatar will join the meeting.
The United States, Britain, Germany, France, China, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Australia, Turkey, Canada, South Korea, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and South Africa are currently members of the group, as stated.
The meeting holds as several international organizations have so far warned of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.
