Many schoolgirls who have been unable to attend school over the past five years say they no longer have any hope for a better future or continuing their education in Afghanistan.
Speaking to the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, July 29, the students said that although education is a fundamental right of both girls and boys, they have been deprived of this right, and there is still no clear prospect for the reopening of schools.
According to them, if school gates had not remained closed over the past five years, many girls would have completed their school education by now, enrolled in university, or already graduated from university.
The students also said that many girls have been forced into marriage during these years, while the desire to migrate has increased significantly among the younger generation.
Meanwhile, the continued closure of girls’ schools has consistently drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
The United Nations (UN), women’s rights activists, civil society organizations, and families have repeatedly called for the immediate reopening of school gates for girls.
