Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has said that the country should build at least two destroyers annually over the next five years, each comparable in size to the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon warship.
North Korea’s state news agency KCNA reported on Tuesday, June 23, that Kim issued the directive during a launching ceremony for a new destroyer at the port city of Nampo.
According to the report, the warship successfully completed operational tests over the past 14 months and has now been commissioned as part of the country’s active naval fleet.
Kim also announced plans to construct another destroyer, named Kang Kon, as well as larger 10,000-ton warships.
The announcement comes after the Kang Kon vessel underwent repairs following a partial capsizing during its launch ceremony last year.
