Local sources say Haji Abdulkhaliq Noorzai, one of the tribal elders of Nimroz Province, was killed in an attack by unidentified armed individuals in Zaranj city.

Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that the attack took place the previous day. As a result, Haji Abdulkhaliq Noorzai’s nephew was also killed, while his son, who had been injured, died this morning due to the severity of his wounds.

The Taliban’s security command in Nimroz has also confirmed the killing of Haji Abdulkhaliq Noorzai and his nephew.

According to sources, Noorzai had personal and tribal disputes with some individuals, and the attack was likely carried out with the motive of personal revenge.

So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This comes as armed individuals also killed Juma Gul Sagari, a local influential figure from Obah District of Herat Province, on July 21, 2026.

Five days earlier, Vakil Ahmad Faizi, a tribal figure from Herat and a close associate of Mohammad Ismail Khan, was targeted by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Herat city and killed.

These incidents have taken place as several tribal elders and influential local figures in western Afghanistan have been targeted in deadly attacks in recent weeks, raising concerns over increasing insecurity and targeted assassinations.
