Naseer Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Switzerland, has said that the people of Afghanistan must take action themselves to bring about change and free themselves from the Taliban, rather than waiting for foreign supporters to do so.

He made the remarks on Wednesday, November 4, in response to the victory of Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim candidate for the US Democratic Party.

The Afghan ambassador to Switzerland added: “The time has come to turn ‘God willing’ into ‘Praise be to God.’”

Andisha said that if the people of Afghanistan want to free themselves from what he called “the curse of the Taliban regime,” they must take action to bring about change instead of complaining and waiting for foreign supporters.

He stressed that change would not come by waiting for the emergence of a miraculous saviour. Instead, it requires prudence, enlightened thinking, setting aside selfish interests, and efforts to achieve genuine consensus.

Andisha described faith and belief without action as fruitless, saying that the people of Afghanistan must take responsibility themselves for liberating their country from the Taliban.

Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Party candidate, won the US Senate election in Michigan on Wednesday.

He is the first Muslim to enter the US Senate.
