The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV, leader of the Catholic Church, underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
Axios reported early Wednesday, October 14, that the Vatican made the announcement following the procedure.
According to the report, the Vatican said the surgery was successful and the Pope had returned to his room.
The Vatican’s statement said the Pope had been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, one of the most common types of lung cancer.
According to the statement, the Catholic leader carried out his usual duties on Monday and was welcomed by supporters and patients at the hospital.
This type of cancer develops when cells lining the outer parts of the lungs become cancerous.
