Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican member of the U.S. Congress, has said he will seek to challenge an agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to purchase diesel fuel.
Axios reported early Sunday, October 11, that Fitzpatrick pledged on Saturday to force a House vote aimed at blocking purchases of Russian oil.
According to the report, Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, said he would introduce the “Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act” and force a vote through a discharge petition.
“This legislation will be brought to the House floor through a discharge petition and will pass by a strong majority,” Fitzpatrick said.
Several Democratic members of Congress have also expressed support for the proposal.
Trump said on Friday that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets, with additional shipments on the way.
However, energy analysts have questioned whether the additional Russian diesel exports would significantly reduce prices.
