Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, has said that the issue of Taiwan will likely be discussed during next week’s meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Rubio said on Tuesday, May 5, at a White House press briefing that the United States does not need any destabilizing events regarding Taiwan.
He added that both countries understand that instability in the region would not benefit either side.
Taiwan is currently facing increasing military pressure from China, which considers the island part of its own territory.
According to reports, Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing on May 14 and 15.
