The Green Party of Britain has voted to classify “Zionism” as a form of racism, a move that has drawn criticism from British Jews and Israel.
Reuters reported on Sunday, October 4, that the party described Zionism as “an ethno-nationalist political project” and renewed its call for the UK Labor government to end all arms transfers to Israel.
According to the report, the party said in a statement that the motion also reaffirmed the Green Party’s support for the right to self-determination and called for the establishment of a single democratic state across the historic territory of Palestine.
The motion was approved by a majority of 1,022 votes to 813, despite opposition from several senior party figures.
Meanwhile, the UK government also considers the actions of Israeli settlers in the West Bank to constitute ethnic cleansing. However, it has said that courts should determine whether other Israeli actions fall under the definition of genocide.
