While millions of people around the world face food insecurity, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says food waste costs the global economy $1 trillion every year.

The agency said on Tuesday, October 27, that this cost includes lost revenue and food that is produced but never consumed.

According to UNEP, reducing food waste helps conserve natural resources and combat climate change.

It can also improve people’s livelihoods by creating job opportunities and reducing the use of water, land and energy.
