Melissa Fleming, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, has called for urgent action to support girls’ education in Afghanistan.
In a post on X on Friday evening, November 6, Fleming said that more than half of primary school-age children in the country remain out of formal education.
She added that 2.6 million girls are currently barred from attending school beyond Grade 6.
Warning about the state of girls’ education in Afghanistan, Fleming said that without urgent action, an entire generation would be left behind.
“Afghanistan: More than half of primary school-age children remain out of formal education, with 2.6 million girls barred from education beyond Grade 6,” she wrote.
The Taliban have barred girls from attending school beyond Grade 6 and imposed restrictions on women’s higher education and employment in public life over the past five years.
