Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, citing a United Nations report, has written that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is the largest terrorist group operating in Afghanistan.
The outlet reported on Wednesday, February 11, that the TTP is evolving into a transnational threat.
According to a monitoring report by the UN Security Council, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan benefits from preferential treatment in Afghanistan.
The report states: “In Afghanistan, the de facto authorities have effectively continued to provide a permissive environment for a range of terrorist groups, particularly Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.”
The report draws a direct comparison between the operational space available to the TTP and that of other militant groups, linking this disparity to the sharply deteriorating security situation in Pakistan.
According to Dawn, of the more than 3,500 terrorist attacks attributed to the TTP last year, over 2,100 were recorded in the second half of the year.
The TTP is said to maintain a significant presence in eastern and southeastern Afghan provinces, including Kunar, Nangarhar, Khost, Paktika, particularly the Barmal district, and Paktia.
However, the Taliban deny the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.
