UN Women has announced that Afghanistan has one of the largest gender gaps in the labor force in the world, with women’s economic participation at an alarmingly low level.
On Monday, March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the organization stated that “only seven percent of women in households are employed, while this figure reaches 84 percent among men.”
These United Nations statistics highlight the profound economic disparity between women and men in Afghanistan.
UN Women further emphasized that this situation should not be normalized and that change remains possible with support for women in Afghanistan gaining access to employment opportunities.
This comes as the United Nations had previously stressed that the low participation of women in the labor market carries wide-ranging social and economic consequences, placing female-headed households at greater risk of poverty and deprivation.
UN Women had also stated in a published report that 90 percent of female-headed households in Afghanistan do not have access to adequate food.
