While women and girls in Afghanistan have been barred from sports activities since the Taliban’s return to power, UN Women has emphasized the importance of sports activities and said that women in sports deserve respect.
The organization wrote on its X page on Tuesday, September 15, that if women in sports are to be discussed, the focus should be on their skills, records, leadership and performance.
UN Women said that equal play means women in sports should be valued for their performance and abilities, whether on the playing field or in the arena.
The remarks come as Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, previously said that the Taliban had barred women and girls from participating in sports activities over the past five years.
The UN Special Rapporteur added that the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls have affected various aspects of their lives.
