The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that the number of children and adolescents out of school has increased for the seventh consecutive year, reaching 273 million.
The organization reported on Thursday, March 26, that this situation is mainly due to population growth, crises, and budget cuts, with one in six school-age children worldwide being deprived of education.
UNESCO emphasized that only two out of every three secondary school students complete their education, yet many countries have made significant progress in providing educational opportunities.
UNESCO has warned that regional crises, especially in the Middle East, have led to school closures and deprived millions of children of classrooms, putting young people at risk of falling behind in their education.
Despite these challenges, UNESCO says that since 2000, enrollment in primary and secondary education has increased overall by 30%, and some countries, including Madagascar, Togo, Morocco, Vietnam, Georgia, and Türkiye, have successfully reduced school dropout rates significantly.
