UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over escalating tensions and the renewed military confrontation in the Gulf region, calling for an immediate halt to attacks between Iran and the United States.

In a post on X on Sunday night, July 12, Guterres said that Iran’s attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. strikes on Iran, and Iranian attacks on targets in neighboring countries are increasing the risk of a wider regional conflict.

He stressed that all of these attacks must stop, warning that a return to full-scale war would have catastrophic consequences for the people of the region, international peace and security, and the global economy.

The UN chief urged Iran and the United States to resume negotiations as soon as possible and resolve their remaining differences through diplomacy.
