United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on major artificial intelligence companies to power all of their data centers with renewable energy by 2030.
Guterres wrote on X on Wednesday, July 8, that AI companies must measure and publicly disclose their total energy consumption and the impacts of their systems.
He said that artificial intelligence may seem invisible, but its effects are real, and the technology’s data centers consume vast amounts of energy.
The UN Secretary-General had previously emphasized that artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace and transforming the world, and that it must be ensured that this technology serves humanity.
