The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has announced that more than 1,300 migrants without legal status were detained in Virginia and Maryland during a 14-day operation in the Washington, D.C., area.
The agency said on Tuesday, August 25, that nearly 400 of those detained had criminal convictions or ongoing legal cases.
Among those detained was a Salvadoran national in Richmond who, according to US officials, was wanted under an arrest warrant related to a murder case.
Federal sources described the operation as one of the agency’s most successful recent operations.
The operation comes as the US government has in recent years emphasized stricter enforcement of immigration laws and the identification of people with criminal records.
