The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that drought and severe water shortages in parts of Bamyan Province have created a serious crisis for residents and forced a number of families to leave their homes.
OCHA reported on Tuesday, June 16, that residents of some remote areas of Bamyan say life is “becoming impossible,” and that water scarcity has made access to the most necessities of life increasingly difficult.
According to the report, nearly half of the residents of a village in Yakawlang have left the area over the past five years due to insufficient water for irrigating agricultural land.
The organization warned that remote and vulnerable areas in Afghanistan are suffering more than others from the consequences of the humanitarian crisis and climate change, and require urgent assistance.
This comes as the continued drought and water shortages could accelerate the displacement of families and increase humanitarian needs in affected areas.
