The United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Afghanistan says that the city of Sheberghan, the center of Jowzjan province, has grown by 60 percent over the past 20 years.

The programme added a message on Wednesday, December 10, stating that urban expansion is not beneficial unless properly planned.

The message stated: “Rapid expansion can be a transformative force when it is well-planned and supported by investment.”

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme has warned that the cities of Herat, Firozkoh, Balkh, Sheberghan, and several other cities in Afghanistan have grown in a substandard manner over the past 20 years.

The programme has also spoken about the increase in urbanization and emphasized that this process must be carried out with appropriate planning.
