Hakim Haqqani, the Chief Justice of the Taliban’s Supreme Court, during a visit to the northern and northeastern provinces, has told members and fighters of the group to refrain from mistreating prisoners, defendants, and visitors.
The Taliban’s Supreme Court reported on Saturday, May 16, that Hakim Haqqani told Taliban fighters that no one should be punished “arbitrarily” and that “criminals” and prisoners must be treated well.
Haqqani claimed that tribalism, regionalism, and linguistic discrimination have been eliminated across Afghanistan today.
He also claimed that Taliban rule in Afghanistan is a “divine blessing” and that members of the group should be grateful for it.
While the Chief Justice of the Taliban’s Supreme Court emphasized humane treatment of prisoners and defendants, the group stands accused of widespread human rights violations, violations of women’s rights, suppression of freedom of expression, mistreatment of people, and the use of violence and torture.
According to statistics from international organizations, Taliban members and fighters have been involved in dozens of extrajudicial tribunals targeting members of the security and defense forces of the former government, as well as mysterious killings, and have subjected prisoners to violence and torture.
