The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says the Haj Piyada Mosque in Balkh may be the oldest Islamic structure in Afghanistan and across Central Asia.
UNAMA said in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 20, that the remains of the Haj Piyada Mosque are a rare example of the art and architectural grandeur of the early Islamic period.
The UN mission said that although much of the historic structure has been lost over time, its surviving wall decorations continue to inspire wonder and admiration.
The United Nations added that deeply carved floral motifs, grape leaves, and intricate geometric designs adorn the mosque’s remaining arches, prayer niches, and other sections.
UNAMA emphasized that the United Nations supports efforts to document, preserve, and raise public awareness about Afghanistan’s cultural heritage, including prominent historic sites such as Haj Piyada.
This comes as neglect, lack of restoration, and inadequate protection of Afghanistan’s archaeological sites have left dozens of historic monuments at risk of damage and destruction.
