At the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty and an international meeting in support of the Iranian people at the French National Assembly, participants emphasized the need to address human rights violations in Iran and to halt the use of the death penalty as a tool of repression.
The meetings, held on Monday, June 29, in France, were attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, President of the French National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, other French officials, as well as several human rights defenders and activists.
According to the report, Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, stressed that the death penalty must be abolished worldwide and called on the international community not to remain silent in the face of this inhumane punishment.
Macron also referred to the human rights situation in Iran and called for greater attention to human rights violations in the country.
Meanwhile, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Foreign Minister, expressed deep concern over the Islamic Republic of Iran’s use of the death penalty as a tool of repression.
In the same context, Yaël Braun-Pivet said at the international meeting in support of the Iranian people that the doors of the French Parliament will always remain open to human rights defenders.
Organizers of the meeting said the initiative aims to build parliamentary support and political sponsorship for political and ideological prisoners in Iran, attract global public and media attention, and increase diplomatic pressure to prevent the implementation of death sentences.
The use of the death penalty in Iran has long raised concerns among international human rights organizations.
