Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says that war and sanctions are “nothing unfamiliar” to Iran.
Al Jazeera reported on Sunday, August 23, that Baghaei said Iran had been under economic sanctions for nearly two decades.
The remarks came as Iran condemned the United States’ plan to impose new economic sanctions on the country, which would place further pressure on Iran’s economy.
Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, has also threatened Iran with “the toughest sanctions in history.”
Bessent also called on China to cooperate with Washington, while China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have increased in recent months over Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz, with disagreements between the two countries continuing despite diplomatic efforts.
